Diverse workplace best for business

New research suggests that a diverse workplace could attract more potential workers and help improve sales at SMEs.A study of 2,000 consumers and employees by Jobcentre Plus found that 56 per cent of people state that they are more likely to use a service or company if they know it has a diverse employee base.
Furthermore, over three quarters of those canvassed said that they believe it is important for businesses to have a diverse work policy in place, designed to attract a good number of female, disabled, ethnic and older workers.
The chief executive of Jobcentre Plus, Lesley Strathie, said: "This research proves to employers that being committed to diversity is not a business choice, but a business imperative.
"Customers and employees want to shop and work in environments which reflect their local communities; by broadening the scope of their recruitment base, employers can plug skills gaps, improve retention and increase productivity."
Half of those canvassed believe companies must be more proactive in attracting workers from varied backgrounds.
