The UK's managers are harbouring fantasies about moving to the countryside and setting up their own SMEs, research found.

In a poll by Cornwall Pure Business, 14 per cent of managers wanted to set up their own small business in the countryside.

Overall, half of the 1,000 bosses based in big cities or industrial towns dreamt of escaping to the country, with 15 per cent tempted to relocate part of their firm and one in five to join a new company in the countryside.

As motivation for the move, respondents cited an improved environment for their family, better work-life balance and reduced commuting times.

However, they were concerned about the potential impact on employees, lack of access to technology and the potentially negative effect on profits.

Those wanting to start-up their own SME queried how they would raise the necessary finances.

Cornwall emerged as the top destination of choice for potential downsizers, followed by Devon and the Scottish Highlands.
