New research claims to have unveiled three different types of small and medium sized (SME) internet-based businesses in the UK.

According to web hosting outfit Fasthosts, SMEs can assess which type of business they are through using the company's SME Indicator study.

On the basis of the findings, which considered areas such as amount of hosting services used, frequency of website use and the number of servers and IP addresses needed, companies were placed in to either Personal User, Entrepreneur or Serious User groups.

Personal users were found to run their sites "intuitively and economically", with between one and five employees at the firm.

Entrepreneurs are more dynamic, with websites having been in use for more than a year and updated regularly.

Both pale in comparison with the serious user, who runs the latest technology to ensure they gain a business advantage and have the highest website traffic.

"Even if a website is designed just to provide contact details or a shop-front brochure - it shouldn't become a neglected part of the business," said Stephen Holford, the director of product marketing at Fasthosts.

"In 2006 more purchases than ever were made online," he concluded.
