The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) is unveiling a new scheme to help SMEs.

The scheme, which has been signed up to by ICAEW member firms, will offer expert advice to small businesses.

The initiative comes as a response to a government report which recommended the introduction of a means for SMEs and other businesses to identify specialist financial advisers.

Already, 1,900 ICAEW firms are on board and ready to offer their services, in a bid to provide businesses with a wider access to bespoke financial guidance.

Michael Izza, chief executive of the ICAEW, said: "I am delighted that the Institute is the first professional body to establish this scheme. Our research shows that accountants are the most frequently consulted source of external business advice by businesses."

He added: "Our members already give guidance to many SMEs and because of our members these companies can do business with confidence. The scheme aims to signpost more SMEs to the expertise a chartered accountant can provide."

The government and Accountants Working Group report was published in 2004.
