Small businesses thrive when the postal service is efficient, according to a report form the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

SMEs are heavy users of the post office so it is important that postal services provide them with reliable postal services, the report found.

Some 88 per cent of small businesses send mail every working day.

The report was mounted in part as a response to calls that the post office may have been getting less reliable, particularly since it reverted to a once daily delivery programme in the UK.

The FSB is insisting that reliable delivery times are essential for SMEs.

In additional research, Western Mail found that 84 per cent of people still receive their mail before midday, and 40 per cent received mail before 10:00GMT.

The Royal Mail has been subject to government efficiency targets since the introduction of the Postal Services Act in 2000.
