Microsoft has announced that its latest attempt to crack down on the illegal use of its software by small to medium sized enterprises is underway.

The firm has provided companies with less than 250 computers with a questionnaire to fill out regarding their software use, reports ComputerWeekly.

It aims to make sure that companies are only running licensed editions of Microsoft's software.

Ram Dhaliwal, Microsoft's licensing programme manager, warned that the names of firms who had not retuned the questionnaire within 14 days or had made no attempt to contact Microsoft to explain that they needed more time would be handed to the Business Software Alliance (BSA).

The BSA is able to enforce fines against any firms found to be using software illegally.

"Our goal is to get customers to pay for what they use. If a customer is using our software, we ask them to pay for it," Mr Dhaliwal added.

Microsoft launched its new Vista software programme earlier this week.
