New research indicates that the use of online technology is becoming more widespread among small to medium sized enterprises.

In a study by Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), emails were found to be used by 90 per cent of businesses, while two in three were using web pages.

In addition, the group predicts that the use of corporate blogs will rise by a third during the course of the year.

Andi Mann, EMA's senior analyst, said: "Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is a rapidly evolving field within IT management."

"In addition to the challenge posed by traditional content such as documents, images, forms and videos, today’s enterprise must be able to address new online content technologies like web pages, blogs, wikis, podcasts and RSS feeds in their overall ECM strategy."

However, the are fears that some companies are not fully utilising the technological opportunities open to them.

Some 82 per cent of firms were found to be using their network file servers as their main "content repository", with four in five companies claiming that their management of content was "effective".
