SMEs at risk of e-crime

A leading internet crime expert has warned that small to medium sized enterprises may be putting themselves at unnecessary risk of e-crime.North Wales Police's detective chief superintendent, Chris Corcoran, who is also a member of the e-Crime Wales Steering Group, claims that SMEs' computers and infrastructures are at risk if they are left accessible to outside users.
A large number of firms are failing to take the necessary measures to protect themselves from criminals, Mr Corcoran claims, with wireless networks particularly vulnerable to infiltration.
"Many businesses are still failing to realise the need for tight IT security," he said.
"It is something that should be at the top of their agenda," he added, stressing that commercial and confidential information could be exposed by hackers, leaving companies facing "huge damage".
The eCrime Wales Summit 2007 takes place in March, which will tackle issues such as internet crime's impact upon businesses in the country and how firms and individuals can help prevent it.
