SMEs 'must use web power'
Published On 8 February 2007 at 11:33:39
Small to medium sized enterprises are being told that they must do more to harness the power of the internet if they are to drive their business forward.Web hosting company Fasthosts has provided SMEs with a benchmark for firms to ascertain which type of online business they are and ways in which to boost sales.
The SME Indicator study evaluated firms using factors such as frequency of website use, the number of hosting services, and the amount of servers and IP addresses required.
Those in the Personal User category were revealed to operate their sites "intuitively and economically", with between one and five employees at the company.
Entrepreneurs were found to be more dynamic and to update their sites regularly, while the Serious User runs the latest technology to make sure they receive high numbers of hits and make the most of their business.
"Even if a website is designed just to provide contact details or a shop-front brochure - it shouldn't become a neglected part of the business", said Stephen Holford, the director of product marketing at Fasthosts.
"You wouldn't be enticed to purchase from a shop that hasn't changed its window display for the past two years, so why should the web be any different?"
