Small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have received advice regarding data requests. The best practice document from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) includes a detailed checklist that is hoped will enable SMEs to confidently and efficiently deal with data requests from individuals regarding the information that the firm holds about them.
Expected to be especially helpful is the different action that must be taken in regard to information that can be provided under normal business practices and that which must be classed as held under the Data Protection Act.
The deputy commissioner, David Smith, said: "The Data Protection Act gives us all important rights, enabling us to check the personal information that is held about us and to correct that information where necessary.
"This guidance sets out clear advice for small and medium sized businesses to help them deal with requests from individuals for access to information an SME might keep about them."
Identity check protocols, the use of data that includes information about third parties and examples of instances when data should not be released are all dealt with in the publication.
