Entrepreneur praised for regeneration

Regeneration chiefs have praised a Staffordshire businessman after he bought a notoriously unattractive building - and restored it to a modern, mixed-use complex.Andrew Smith won the accolade for Private Sector Impact on Regeneration at the North Staffordshire Regeneration Zone's RISE (NSRZ) awards 2006 following his redevelopment of the former Pepper Garage in Stoke-on-Trent, the Sentinel newspaper reports.
The building is now known as the Forecourt and the development has created jobs for 100 white collar workers, as it is currently being used to house the payroll development of the University Hospital Birmingham Foundation Trust.
Mr Smith told the paper: "It is nice to have all the hard work by everyone from my family to all the professionals such as architects recognised. We hoped the development would be successful."
Achievements of several other people and organisations were recognised at last week's ceremony, held at the Victoria Hall in Hanley. The awards celebrate the work of the public, private and voluntary sectors that are making great strides towards regenerating North Staffordshire.
