The government is failing to do enough for small businesses, according to new research.

A study by business magazine Accelerator has shown that the majority of small and medium sized enterprise (SME) owners do not feel that they are given enough support and theta more could be done to help their industry, icwales.co.uk reports.

Of the 500 participants who took part in the survey, nearly one in five cited "red tape" as their biggest cause for concern this year. Dealing with competitors, under-investment and controlling staff turnover were also problems voiced by the respondents.

However, the study did reveal that for the most part those questioned had positive feelings for the coming year.

Earlier this week the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) revealed that businesses in Britain have a yearly cumulative expenditure of almost £56 billion because of costs accrued through red tape. This is an increase of nearly £10 billion in the last 12 months.
