After a series of initial trials further projects will be rolled out across the country to try to encourage the UK's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to recycle, according to reports.

In February this year, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) launched a small-scale trial to try to get SMEs to recycle their waste products more efficiently.

After the success of this project, WRAP said that it will be working with 16 partner organisations across the UK to investigate the best ways of collecting mixed recyclables from businesses.

Liz Morrish, WRAP's SME recycling programme manager, told conservation website letsrecycle.com: "We have learned a lot of valuable lessons during the first phase of feasibility trials in terms of what support SMEs need to be able to recycle more effectively.

"This demonstration trial phase of the programme enables us to work with our partners on a much larger scale so that we can develop robust good practice guidelines and models that will enable better targeting of SMEs."

When launching the original scheme in February, Ms Morrish said: "SMEs cover a vast range of businesses that all have different recycling needs - either because of the relative low quantity of recyclable materials they produce, the space available to store materials or their location."

Government figures suggest that businesses are responsible for almost half the carbon emissions that the UK produces every year.
