SMEs 'want more bank holidays'
Published On 30 April 2007 at 09:13:52
Half of the owners of the UK's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) would like to see St. George's Day become a bank holiday, a new study indicates.Telecoms and broadband specialist Unicom carried out a study which found that exactly 50 per cent of SME owners supported a move to implement a further bank holiday on April 23rd.
Chris Earle, the operations director of Unicom, said: "Our findings support a previous survey we conducted after Easter to find out if small business owners would like more bank holidays generally - 53 per cent of them said they would.
"Perhaps St George's Day should be the first new holiday to be introduced to the calendar - it seems to go unnoticed and unrecognised most years, unlike the Irish holiday of St Patrick's."
From October this year, the mandatory holiday requirement for British workers will increase from 20 days a year to 24. By autumn 2008, it is set to rise to 28 days.
