The city of Liverpool is now Britain's most productive area for SMEs, according to a nationwide survey.

Liverpool is reportedly home to many of the nation's most exciting small businesses and employees working for these firms are some of the happiest in the country.

According to the Liverpool Daily Post, Vodafone UK's new study has found that two-thirds of employees believe their company is improving. Nearly half of all respondents said that they were happy to remain in their current position.

Two-thirds of employees in Liverpool also stressed that their firm was performing innovatively. An overwhelming 80 per cent said that their bosses were fair and reasonable.

Business leaders in Liverpool will be delighted with the new survey, as separate research from Vodafone UK indicates that unfair employers are 20 per cent more likely to endure financial losses.

Liverpool has traditionally been one of Britain's most dynamic areas for business innovation, but a recession in the 1970s and 1980s turned the city into an unemployment black spot. But Mike Taylor, chief executive of Business Liverpool, told the Liverpool Daily Post that the future is now extremely bright.

"We do have a lot of innovative new companies coming through now and I think this survey's findings are evidence of where we are in the city's evolution. What we have seen - particularly through the City Growth survey - is that businesses in the city have very strong growth ambitions. Jobs are now being created faster here than in other UK core cities so it is clear the SME sector is growing," he said.

Separate research from Investment Likelihood found that there has been an 11 per cent increase in the number of businesses considering investment in Liverpool. An encouraging 40 per cent of all businesses said they would consider the city during the next 12 months.
