SMEs 'must get their website right'

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a website need to make sure their site is quick to load and functions properly, new research suggests.Findings from 1&1 Internet show that nine out of ten consumers would opt for a competitor is a businesses' website failed to load quickly and effectively.
Over half (53 per cent) of the consumers questioned said that they would wait less than 30 seconds for a site to load before giving up and switching their custom to a rival.
Similarly, SMEs hoping to cash in on the 'e-pound' need to make sure their site has an easy to remember name - 24 per cent of consumers said they avoid sites with complex domain names.
"It is no surprise how strongly consumers feel about poorly performing websites when they suffer significant stress from using them," Andreas Gauger, the chief executive of 1&1 Internet, explained.
"As users become more dismissive of slower sites, SMEs must ensure that their market has instant access to their products and services."
Figures from comScore indicate that a successful internet retailer, such as Tesco, receives over seven million visitors a month, proving how lucrative could be for SMEs who get their website right.
