Seven politicians have been shortlisted by the Forum of Private Businesses (FPB) to receive the prestigious Business-friendly MP/MEP 2007 award. The award is sponsored by the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) and aims to recognise the work of politicians who have gone out of their way to support the interests of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) around the UK.
FPB members have been nominating MPs who they believe have acted constantly in their interests and done everything in their power to promote business.
"It is reassuring to know that there are politicians that have taken the time and effort to engage with the owners and managers of private businesses," said Len Collinson, the national chairman of the FPB.
"Through this award, we aim to highlight the work of those legislators as an example for others to follow."
The politicians who are up for the award are: Nigel Evans, MP for Ribble Valley; Malcolm Harbour, MEP for the West Midlands; Oliver Heald, MP for North-east Hertfordshire; Philip Hollobone, MP for Kettering; Jeremy Hunt, MP for South-west Surrey; Gilliam Merron, MP for Lincoln; and John Penrose, MP for Weston-super-mare.
Elsewhere, SME owners will have the opportunity to quiz shadow chancellor George Osborne about what he would do to help them if the Tories were elected to power.
Mr Osborne is due to participate in a question and answer session with SME owners on May 18th.
