People who work from home need to carefully consider whether they have adequate business insurance, a leading provider has warned.

Cornhill Direct said that most people who work from home would be covered by their employer's insurance policy. However, the company added that people who are self-employed could easily find themselves underinsured.

"Home workers do need to consider the insurance implications because equipment used for commercial purposes may not be adequately covered or covered at all by a standard home insurance policy, particularly if removed from the home," explained Mark Bishop, a spokesman for Cornhill Direct.

"There is also the potential liability issue to consider if a customer or business associate visits their home and is injured."

Cornhill's study also revealed that many workers in the UK are very keen to work in a more flexible way.

In fact, 69 per cent of UK office workers told the insurer that they would choose to work from home if they were given the option by their bosses.

One in five people would like to stay out of the office so much they said they would take a pay cut to work from home.

A recent study by BT Business found that faster broadband connections have allowed the owners of small and medium-sized enterprises to achieve a better work-life balance.
