The majority of the UK's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) do not think that their company website truly reflects their brand, a new survey revealed.

Data gathered by Mediasurface shows that 61 per cent of SMEs think their website fails to accurately reflect their company brand.

However, the survey also revealed that 52 per cent of the employees at these SMEs were unaware how often their own website was updated.

Furthermore, one in ten SMEs still did not have any web presence at all.

"With Web 2.0 increasingly being covered in the media, it was interesting to see that 41 per cent of SMEs surveyed had not heard of it, implying that the message may be getting through to larger businesses but not as efficiently to the smaller business community," added Andy Peart, the chief marketing officer at Mediasurface.

"There is still a great opportunity to show SMEs the true value of effectively managed web content and to illustrate that Web 2.0 is all about using the power of the web for business advantage."

A recent study by Verdict Research estimated that online retail sales in the UK would triple by 2011 - reaching £28.1 billion.
